Artist: Tom Brosseau
Album: Empty Houses Are Lonely
Label: Fat Cat
Release Date: Now
Format: CD

10 tracks of utter acoustic beauty, determined to grab anyone with an ounce of compassion in themselves, and reduce them to a potential pile of tears. This is an album (a collection of songs, written from 2001 - 2006) of utterly personal thoughts squelched through the lovely, fragile voice of Brosseau. I can hear echoes of Nick Drake and Tim/Jeff Buckley. His voice is unique, imperfect, but it’s this quality which enhances the rich tones.

The album employs more depths into sound, making uses of drums, organs, cellos and harmonicas. Such as on ‘Heart of Mine’ and ‘Hurt to Try’, these collection of instruments only add to the beauty of the tracks, not going overboard, just enhancing the songs to perfection.

Immediately some listeners will fall in love with the identifiable character portrayed by Tom in ‘Fragile Mind’ “No no-one knows… my mind… is fragile” whilst he wisps off into his own lullaby grasping his voice on the way where you feel as if you’re drowning with him. Something not a lot of folk music tends to do. A great 2nd album.
