Album Reviews
Being a newbie to TK's music, I'm joyed by the folk/country/blues content that I'm instantly confronted with. TK's gruff vocal style is also quite complementary to the record - it’s very Neil Young in its sound. TK shows high talent throughout the album - although this apparently has been evident for years in his career. He was already playing high-class fluent guitar by eight years old - after a while mingling with the older guys for music more mature than his generation. He grew up in Kansas with friends, living in garages with no heat - so I suppose learning music was probably a main antidote to a shit life. But onto the album. 'Phantom Parade' is the 3rd album from Mr TK Webb succeeding 'KCK' and the debut ''The Ungodly Hours'. The 2nd and 3rd being released on Social Registry. It has some great moments. Opener 'The Desert' is a great song of slide guitars, great riffs and piano's blending in with TK's vocals to present a country-blues element albeit highly enjoyable. Reminding me a little of Buffalo Killers. He plays Harmonica on 'Wet Eye'd Morn' which adds a slow little western touch to it, with a small bit of piano. If feels kind of sorrowful, but nice. 'Sunday Night' adds a backing of percussion whilst 'Phantom Parade' is quick on the piano and strumming, with light harmonising vocals in the background reflecting on TK's vocals. Xylophones are added into 'The Spade' adding a nice little touch. The album ends on 'Classy' which is a big finisher and highly active building loudly on the low guitar riffs vs. the pulsing high strings which wrestles with the fast piano and TK's shouting voice. Probably the best track on the album for me. Hopefully we'll be hearing of TK Webb more, because it'd be a shame not to - this is great stuff! Myspace: TK Webb
