Band: SSM
Album: SSM
Label: Alive Records
Release Date: Now
Format: CD

With the stuff I've heard bursting out from Alive's cannons lately, they seem to have a soft spot for cool garage bands and similar. They like to keep to the basics with their output - i.e. the bands record it 'as is'. But SSM on the otherhand, well they seem different in a positive way.

Their new album starts off in a crash of random synths then blends into synth infected rock. It kind of reminds me of the first time I listened to the now diseased 'Clor'. It was really suprising as it didn't seem to fit with the Alive labels sound, more a kind of direction change for them - in a good way. I don't mean the album is totally different from their output, it still has the garage-rock element to it. But it's also expansive in its genres, and as a result sounds fuller...

The album covers a multitude of genres - futuristic rock/garage rock/synth pop, you name it. Using organs for some songs with catchy space-riffs on others, plus bringing back some 60's garage rock in places - they seemed to have nailed the quality album trophy well. Plus lyrically the album is majorly touching in places. 13 tracks of lush space-rock-pop coming from Szymanksi, Shettler and Morris.

So we have the Von-Bondies, The White Stripes and The Raconteurs from the Detroit scene - count the months till we see SSM added to the big boys list! Bear in mind this is only their debut!
